With nearly 300 performances since 2017, these Fourberies de Scapin never cease to delight all generations. The sociétaire Denis Podalydès likes to recall that it is a “troop play, written not for the Court but for the people”. It was created in 1671 at the Palais-Royal during a period of work. Molière was then freed from the constraints of ballet comedies and machine comedies: it was “pure theater” that gave the director great freedom of action.
In a setting evoking the port of Naples, the city where the play takes place, Denis Poldalydès unfolds all the elements of this comedy where Molière takes the side of youth. During the absence of their fathers who went on a trip, Léandre fell in love with Zerbinette while Octave married Hyacinte. But their elders are back, with the idea of imposing an arranged marriage on their respective sons.
