Instructions

1- Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 425°F (220°C).

2- Prepare the Dough:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.
  • Using your hands or a wooden spoon, mix until a soft dough forms.

3- Shape the Loaf:

  • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about a minute.
  • Shape it into a round loaf and place it on a greased baking sheet.
  • Using a sharp knife, cut a deep cross on top of the dough.

4- Bake:

  • Place the loaf in the preheated oven and bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

5- Cool and Serve:

  • Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.
  • Slice and serve with butter, jam, or alongside your favorite stew.

Note: For variations, you can add a handful of raisins or currants to the dough for a touch of sweetness.
