No successful end of the year without a good Offenbach from behind the fagots! La Périchole is one of Maître Jacques’s grands crus. Fresh, sparkling and drinkable at will. The opéra bouffe is inspired by a comedy by Mérimée that Jean Renoir brought to the screen with Anna Magnani (Le Carrosse d’or).
La Périchole really existed, she was a famous actress and singer in Lima who was the mistress of the viceroy of Peru. We don’t know if her nickname meant “little wonder” or “native she dog.” It depended on the tone. Hortense Schneider, known as “Le Passage des princes”, ensured the success of the work. Then Berganza and Crespin sang in turn “O my dear lover”, “Ah what a dinner” or “I adore you brigand”.
You can be sure that the slaughter of Éléonore Pancrazi, Marc Barrard and young Kaëlig Boché should make us forget all our worries.
